1. Carl Sagan/John Boswell- "A Glorious Dawn"
Jack White, and his Third Man records really is breaking down barriers and connecting generations with his company. In all of my 4000 records I can easily say that this is my favorite record I own. It would be the last one I would get rid of, if I had to sell my collection. The first one I would grab if there was a fire. And it only cost me 6 bucks. Plus shipping of course. So it is only right that it is my first 45 review. The last thing I would consider Carl Sagan, is a musical recording artist. However, through the magic of Auto-tune, the brilliant arrangement/composition, and the mind of John Boswell, this becomes a reality. Matter of fact I can think of no better use for auto tune than this application. The fact we use it today to “fix mistakes” makes me sick. The magic of human performance is linked to “mistakes”. Carl Sagan had the hit TV series “Cosmos” in the 70’s. It is a work of art. Carl is nothing short of a master poet using science. His only rival as a poet is Neil Peart. His Cosmos series is awesome at explaining the concept, that the magic of the Cosmos is a way for it to know itself. Everything is connected. Some of his best lines from Cosmos are sampled in this song. All to an ambient, electronic, backing track. A little bonus is at the end, with a line or 2 from Stephen Hawking. Who actually has already become a rock star through the magic and music of Pink Floyd. “Keep Talking”(From the album “The Division Bell”, and “Talkin’ Hawkin’(from their album “The Endless River”), are 2 great examples of the genius of David Gilmour. John Boswell takes his lead by making Carl step up to the plate with his involuntary contribution. Being a fan of Sagan since a child, thanks to Andrew Wilke, my life and eyes have been opened to the magic of the world around me. I can think of no better way to pay homage to this genius of a man, than setting him to ambient music. Jack White’s label still has these for sale. There are notes of Tangerine Dream, Steve Roach, and Enigma in here. Get your nose over the glass and breath in! Go get you one!! (And check out the laser etched B side! Jack White comes through I tell you)
